Addiction as a Behavioral Health Disorder

Anyone can be a victim of behavioral health disorder. Although we have the authority to choose, peer pressures can get in the way of the decisions we will be creating. Addiction is one of the most common behavioral health disorders. Addiction is quite widespread in every society. It knows no age bracket and socio-economic status. Addiction as defined in the Merriam Webster Dictionary can mean the compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance characterized by well defined physiological symptoms.

There is no control what one can get addicted to. One can even get addicted to sex and love. Substance addiction is one of the most popular kind of addiction. Its reputation has sprung from the image it gives off, the notorious image of negativity. People who are in the pits of substance addiction usually flaunt a sequence of bad behaviors affecting people that surround him or her.

There are many different substances an individual can get addicted to. Stimulants, opioids, and hallucinogens and PCP are examples of these different substances that produce negative effects to the body. These substances have an effect on certain biochemicals in our brain which has direct reinforcing effects. The mesolimbic dopamine system is one of the areas of the brain that is involved in effects of these psychoactive substances. A flavor of good food and physical satisfaction such as those given off by sexual stimulation activates this kind of system. This system can be set off by psychoactive substances already mentioned. The effect is always so severe. The activation of mesolimbic dopamine system makes people to desire the cause of activation to replicate its effects.

The utilization of such substances gives off established changes in one’s mesolimbic dopamine system which makes an individual long for for the substance. The mesolimbic dopamine system gets sensitized once the substance has been used repeatedly. In short term and long term use of these substances, makes hard for the people to resist once they have already tried. The casual trying of any of the substances can make an individual crave for more. The high that is so compelling is the reason why it is wanted more.

The central nervous system is the one that gets activated every time stimulants are used. This causes feelings such as pleasure, vigor, power, a decreased desire for sleep, and reduced appetite. Examples of stimulants are cocaine, amphetamines, nicotine, and caffeine. Cocaine is one of the most highly addictive substances ever known. This substance can be snorted to have its effects felt quickly. Amphetamines are substances initially established as antihistamines until people started noticing its stimulant effects. Nicotine is an alkaloid being found in tobaccos. Nicotine can be famously found in cigarettes. Caffeine on the other hand is the most weighty used stimulant substance. Greatest amount of caffeine used is attributed to the wide use of coffee.

Opioids is used for a thousand of years to relieve pain until its assets have been discovered to be dangerously addictive. Examples of opioids are morphine and heroin. Morphine was used broadly as a pain reliever. This has been in the 19th century until its being addictive was discovered. There are more examples of opioids such as methadone and codeine. Opioid substances are substances found in the sap of the opium poppy.

Most of these substances produce perceptual illusions and distortions when taken in large amount in small doses. Peyote, ecstasy, and LSD are the main ingredients of hallucinogens. On the other hand, PCP or phenylcyclidine are substances manufactured for smoking and snorting. PCP is not identified as hallucinogen but its effects are mostly the same. PCP is also popularly called as angel dust, PeaCePill, Hog, and Tranq.

Substance addiction is considered as a behavioral health disorder due to the effects brought about by the use of the substance. It produces a great change in ones behavior that is most of the time negative. This modification in behavior usually affects the people that encase the individual. These substances are against the law and can only be used legally when prescribed by specialists. In order to stay away from problems, one should not use these substances carelessly.

Addiction is considered a behavioral health disorder due to the negative effects it produces in one’s behavior.
